First Day at Work

Blogged By: Low Hang Wei @ January 22nd, 2007 - 11:15 pm

Today is my first official working day. I know I used to say that I would never work unless I really have no choice. However, I said those words without expecting any decent opportunity to hop along from nowhere. When I first heard about the job, I’ll be honest and say that I wasn’t very keen. It was only after meeting the boss and discussing about the potential learning opportunities and potential future income that I immediately decided to hop in. I was so enthusiastic that I was even willing to work without pay. Additionally, besides deciding to join in the company at that instance, my respect for my current boss was also deeply rooted at this first meeting.

After working there for a day, I’m very certain that I made the right decision to join the company. There are plenty of reasons, but let’s zoom into the fact that my boss was more focused on giving me a learning opportunity than trying to get his money worth of labor from me. He could have simply made me do programming, which will definitely be a good payoff to him in a business sense, but he chose to expose me to Marketing research and brainstorming. Although I have read quite a lot of books on Internet Marketing and some books on Marketing in general, I did not really have a chance to practice what I learnt. Joining this company proved to be just the exact exposure I needed to embark on a career as a Marketer in future.

Unsurprisingly, there were many instances where I was speechless after being asked questions. However, I would just like to mention that my boss has been very patient with me and giving me the appropriate level of stress to get me moving as well. I really appreciate my boss’s efforts and I’m not writing this because he reads this blog. Just for your knowledge, he is too busy to read this blog and no one in my office knows I have a blog, so I’m not trying to bootlick my boss or something. I speak these words with total truth and I serve my boss with absolute conviction. At the moment, I’m far behind in terms of Marketing concepts and implementation. However, I will do the best I can to match up with his Marketing guys and even surpass them within 4 months. I know it’s not an easy thing to do, but if it’s easy, it ain’t rewarding.

In the morning, I was quite disheartened. My ideas were rejected in an instance and I thought they were good before presenting them too. After all, those concepts came from top Internet Marketers. However, my boss led me to see things from another perspective slowly and modified my chain of thoughts. I realized an interesting aspect about Marketing… there is no one-size-fits-all solution. I particularly liked the idea about brainstorming where the customers are coming from currently and build on that.

In the afternoon, things were slightly better. The boss did liked some of my ideas and I was really ecstatic when he mentioned he liked an idea. It’s still too far off from totally exceeding my boss’s expectations though. I got to work even harder, since I’m not a fan of under-delivering. Even if I have to sleep only 3 hours per day, I will continue working hard, thinking hard and producing more great implement-able ideas. I was highly recommended into the company and my boss places utmost trust in me, referring me to my colleagues as a genius. It feels good, but it just means I have to make sure I do exceedingly well for the sake of myself, my boss and my referrer as well. Apart from surpassing his marketing guys, I am also working towards becoming a world-class Marketer.

With that goal in mind, I’m heading off to finish up some work before resting for the night.

Wow. At last something refreshing in the the blogsphere. It is nice to see a youing person like you having that million dollar aim. I did the same when I was 22 but I have postponed that goal so I can reach it before I am 30, hmm 4 years to go as well.

You talk about success principles a lot and I am a strong believer in that. U can check out my thoughts if you want.
