First Day of Internship at OCBC

Blogged By: Low Hang Wei @ December 2nd, 2008 - 12:17 am

Today marks the first day of my internship at OCBC Bank and I got to say that the number of interns that they took in is pretty impressive given the current economic outlook. I still do not know the exact details of my job scope yet, but hearing from colleagues, it sounds better than what I read in the original description. My colleagues seem to be quite nice and I have a female supervisor that looks quite young and looking at her, I simply can’t bring myself to subscribe to the female terror bosses hearsay.

I don’t think I will be blogging much about my internship after this post, at least not about the details, since I do not want to accidentally leak any confidential stuff while being too over-excited with blogging. All that I can say is that I truly wish that Singapore is less crowded, because the morning rush is killing me. After the morning rush and fight for train breathing space, we have to fight for seats during the afternoon lunch madness. At the end of the day, we even have to fight our way back home. More seats are needed during these insane hours, any genie around?

Yesterday, I went Science Centre with my daughter again and I marvel at how kids can continuously get excited by the same things over and over again. I also get amazed by how much I am like a kid. :) I wonder how different my life would have been if I haven’t had a daughter then and while I can’t reach a conclusion as to whether I would have been richer, I can easily be sure that having my daughter definitely made my life happier.

My daughter recently asked me “Daddy, what’s your goal?”
I was quite surprised that she will be asking this question at her age and I told her that my goal would be to achieve what she wants me to achieve. I wasn’t joking when I said that.

Anyway, I won’t say what she said to me, but I definitely still think I want to hang on to my goal of making a million dollars, although I may not meet the initial deadline set. MyWobile is a location-based social networking tool that I have been working on with a few friends and it is expected to go into beta soon. I wonder how this venture would turn out although there are some constrains at the moment. Personally, I believe that this venture is either going to be a big success or simply fade away, with a low possibility of something in-between. Let’s see how it goes. :)

Internship? Does this lead to a full time job?

Hey I thought you just graduated. You don’t have to answer but the question is how come you have a daughter?

I used to take taxi to work everyday until the taxi fare hikes make me give up. Now I wake up early to take the bus+MRT. Initially was like hell but after a few weeks it was a piece of cake. It is a matter of getting used to. I saved thousands in cab fares.

I don’t know whether it would lead to a full-time job, so it’s all about just fulfilling my degree requirement at the moment. I also haven’t graduated, but soon. Officially, it would be next year June. Anyway, there’s only one natural way to have a daughter, isn’t it? For me, it was a natural occurence.

I meant to say you look young to be a father especially these days when people usually get married at 30-35.

The economy seems to be sinking faster than a rock. Next June things can look really bad - just the sad reality. Many young people took the MoE offer to be teachers to get over this bumpy period. Hope your startup leads to something.

When you’re young, dream big dreams, try everything and remember there is little to lose.

    Hang Wei says:
Yes, thanks for your well wishes and I do agree that there is little to lose for me. Whatever it is, I believe I have rode through one of the toughest period of my life, which was when I was 16 to 21 years old. Economy wise, things will ultimately pick up one day, everyone got to live through tough times a few times in his/ her life.
