It’s My Birthday Today

It’s my birthday today, but I’m free enough to write a post about my previous website for the benefit of those who are interested in Internet Marketing.

Before we start, you might want to go to Google and type the word ‘freebies’. This is a common word in the U.S meaning free stuff and that’s the keyword that my previous site targetted. As of the moment I write this post, there’s a total of 23 million web pages displayed and the site I built, Freebiedot.com, ranks number 3 with a google pagerank of 6. When I sold the site, it was ranked number 2, with a google pagerank of 7.

This is nothing amazing, but if you visit the site and click on ‘New Freebies’, you can see that the last update was more than a year ago and even before that, updates were not very frequent. I am not sure exactly how much time the new owner spends on the website, but judging from the updates, it’s not much. Therefore, why is it that this same site could continuously be ranking so high even after years, when nothing much has changed?

Does that mean that Google has not done any updates, that they have not changed the way they ranked websites? Does it mean that the competitors are not improving, that they are not doing anything to improve their search engine rankings? Actually, the answer is simple: backlinks.

When I was building the site, I continuously asked other webmasters to link to my site. After 8 months, the site achieved the ranking in Google, therefore receiving hundreds of daily visitors from Google and few hundreds from other links. In total, the site was visited by close to 2000 visitors every single day and generating a nice income. It was at this point that I needed to enlist for National Service and sold away the site.

From this, you can tell the importance of getting webmasters to link to your site, the number of sites linking to you is a major criterion for search engine ranking. I knew nothing about web building at that time other than this simple strategy and I was able to make nice money from it. Of course, now that I have read much more and discovered more strategies, I will be trying them out in my future websites and will blog about the progress.

However, if you’re a new Internet Marketer, just remember: Do not procrastinate, simply try everything and you will know if it works. If you have any questions, leave it in the comments and I might blog about it in the next post.
