“Money No Enough 2″ Movie Review
Blogged By: Low Hang Wei @ August 11th, 2008 - 3:52 pmI was not very keen on watching this show, but my mother wanted to watch it, so I went ahead with her. Seriously, watching movies is so expensive nowadays, costing me $21 to buy just two tickets online. I can still remember that it was around $5 ten years ago and I guess this is the scary part about inflation. Despite presupposing that it’s a stupid movie, I still went ahead with my mother because I know very well that my mother has no one else to watch with.
When the movie started, I began to feel that the whole show is going to be very lame, with a marvelous display of Hokkien songs and an everflowing exchange of Hokkien conversations. It turns out that Hokkien was really widely used throughout the entire show… it was almost as if Hokkien is our country’s national language. Anyway, the beginning of the movie seems quite disrespectful to our nation and I wonder if the movie is being sponsored by opposition parties. Additionally, I wonder about how foreigners would portray our nation if they were to watch the movie.
Taking into account that Singapore’s movie industry is quite new, I felt that the producers should be more responsible in portraying Singapore positively so that we can compete on a global front. Perhaps I may be thinking too much, since a movie is just for entertainment. However, history has shown us the power of propanganda. I can’t held but think of how foreigners will look at us on a global platform with a certain politician wannabe ridiculing our country publicly on international fronts and now even an approved movie seems to portray the government as just a money sucking machine.
I feel sad that Singapore may be perceived this way, since I really love the country where I grow up in, despite always joking about migrating to other countries. I love Singapore for the security that it provides, the convenience and accessibility of everything and the fact that it’s small and all my friends are near me to a certain extent. Most importantly, I love Singapore for the food paradise that it is and I’m quite sure that there’s nowhere I can enjoy the variety of food as much as Singapore.
Back to the movie review… I find that the movie seems to have quite a good storyline, but the plot does not seem to be very good, with sudden transitions to different scenes. Perhaps it’s the way the movie is made to be, but I didn’t really like it… it’s as if they are trying to cover too much in two hours. With that said though, the movie is quite touching and the display of emotions towards the ending really tells the world that Singapore has good actors and actresses around.
Most people watching this movie may end up in tears and probably think that the sons are good for nothings. However, I think that it brings forth a harsh reality right to our face. If one day, our loved ones really end up in hospital and we do not have the finances to support their hospital bills, what can we do? It’s something for us to ponder, especially since many of us do not even have $10k in our bank accounts, not to mention that hospitalisation bills easily go up to few hundred thousands.
Being content with what we have is good, but what we have today… we may lose it tomorrow if we are not prepared for such situations. It shows that Insurance is really important and I’m not just saying it because my wife is with Prudential. I’m saying it because you don’t want what happens in the movie to happen to your family.
