Natural Search Engine Optimization

Blogged By: Low Hang Wei @ October 25th, 2007 - 5:12 am

It’s been some time since I blogged about Internet Marketing, but I just felt that I had to write a post about Internet Marketing. After all, Internet Marketing was the first vehicle to ever get me a significant amount of money. Through prudent financial planning and investing, I have been able to grow my wealth slightly in the past year. It is still way too far from my goal, so I have to work much harder in the coming year. Although I have not really been engaging myself in Internet Marketing activities, I still regard it as one of my core skills, therefore I’m giving back something to my loyal visitors.

This article is going to be about search engine optimization, a topic which I believe will interest many internet marketers. The reason I decided to write about this post today is due to the fact that I just checked my Google Analytics statistics and search engines account for a large percentage of my visitors for this blog. Well… I’m not really surprised about this finding with the way I’m running the blog.

Firstly, I have not been soliciting links, so incoming links are minimal, other then a few goodwill links. However, people are starting to notice this blog and have started linking over, so that may change in the near future. As a sidenote, I really appreciate all links to this blog. :)

As a start to discuss about search engine optimization, I’m going to use this blog as an example. Using the words “first million”, you can search under Google and this blog will appear on the first page, somewhere around the bottom. It’s quite fantastic that it can come under the first page competing among 400+million other pages. However, do you think it’s a success? If you ask me, I will say it’s not. By the way, I was not optimizing for the phrase and I could probably make this blog rank among the top three by making some changes on the blog.

However, it’s useless. The main reason is because “first million” is not a frequently searched word. The key to search engine optimization for a blog is to find phrases that are not very competitive, yet widely searched. Thereafter, write a post with the title and use the phrase frequently in your post. If done well, it can grant your blog a temporary visitor boost. While this traffic is not exactly going to stay the same after your post gets knocked down the pages, it can get your blog the attention it requires when it’s just posted.

I did this a few times before when I write articles, like why did I choose the words mutual funds over unit trusts or exams over examinations. They were mainly search engine optimization concerns. To get the short burst of traffic, these are some little things that an internet marketer can look out for. Do the research on keyword research tools like wordtracker and see which phrases you can rank high for. Besides that, those phrases should have plenty of searches on them. Of course, you won’t get what you want everytime, but the first step is always the toughest. Do it consistently right and your traffic will fly. Obviously, I haven’t been consistent. :)

I hope this little tip helps, because it’s what I have been using to give my blog a traffic boost from time to time. Nowadays, I pretty much write what I like though, because I believe that in the long run, I will have plenty of content and search engines will ultimately love my blog. You can help speed up the process by linking to me. :)
