Pay Per Play Advertising

Blogged By: Low Hang Wei @ February 16th, 2008 - 3:20 pm

Recently, a new type of advertising has emerged on the Internet - Pay Per Play. This term was also used for websites that pays people when they refer people to play games, but now Net Audio Ads has been using the term for playing audio ads. To illustrate the concept, I have added the code on this post’s page. You may or may not hear it, depending on their ad inventory. If you do, you will hear a 5 second ad.

Personally, I think this form of advertising is more intrusive than pop up ads at the moment. The reason is that I’m sometimes irritated by websites with audio and I can imagine how much more irritated I will be with a 5 second audio ad. Additionally, our speakers may not be configured at the right volume and it may be too loud or soft. If it’s too loud, it irritates me more. If it’s too soft, I can’t hear it and the advertisers lose their dollars.

Despite my own personal comments, I still think this type of advertising is innovative and we never know what may or may not work. There are dozens of webmasters who are in for a quick profit and do not mind turning their visitors away anyway. Besides, the advertisements on MSN will seem to me as intrusive if it’s related to me first since it plays a video when I roll my cursor over somewhere the bottom of MSN window. However, I have been entertained by those videos so many times that I do in fact like it. I’ll just sum up the post with some advantages and disadvantages.

Disadvantages

  1. It may be difficult to get enough advertisers, since it is difficult to track Return on Investment. This means mostly the companies who are interested in such form of advertising are probably big companies interested in branding. However, they may be worried that the form of advertising is intrusive and may devalue the brand instead.
  2. Visitors may not like it and think it’s very intrusive.
  3. 5 seconds is too short a time for most people to catch what the ad is saying.

Advantages

  1. Webmasters may be open to another revenue stream with just a 5 second advertisement and visitors do not have to leave the site, although they may not come again. :)
  2. It’s innovative, so it will at least draw some attention.
  3. Some visitors may prefer to be served audio ads compared to having popups here and there.

Personally, I am eager to see whether the program can be a huge success online. It’s always interesting to see new developments take place on the internet and people are pushing new forms of advertising all the time.

How far are you away from your $1million goal? We’re interested to know about it. 2years to go. another half a million more?

    Hang Wei says:
In 100% honesty, I’m further away from it than when I started this blog in terms of dollars. For this half a year, I’m just trying to accelerate my studies so that I can have 1 and a half years of full-time working on this goal. I have been taking more modules than my peers every semester, so I should be able to finish it early.
