Pursuing Interest Over Money

Blogged By: Low Hang Wei @ June 26th, 2009 - 2:31 am

After a long period of struggle, I finally decided to pursue my interest and accepted a job offer in Market Risk Management at OCBC. With my decision, it means that I have to work much harder, enjoy less flexibility and yet get paid less. From doing something that I have years of experience with, I switched over to doing something almost totally new, so I guess the work experience is expected to be totally different. First things first, I think there will be so much things that I would need to learn and I pretty much expect a lot of overtime.

However, I believe that my decision would add value to my life in many ways and to be honest, I’m quite certain that this decision will be a better decision in terms of money in the long run. Of course, I’m also afraid of many things since I’m like stepping into uncharted waters.

Anyway, I learnt a couple of things recently which I think is very important and it had been a very memorable period of time. My colleagues were great and some of them have helped me see things from different perspectives and I really feel fortunate to have known them. It’s ironic that I even thought that I would not really get to talk much with any colleague, since I wasn’t even committed to staying with the company, but I was proven quite wrong. Eventually, I did have quite a bit of fun with them even though it was just 3 months.

At this same period of time, I feel sorry for the startup venture that I was involved with and have eventually resigned from my position, since I simply cannot be meeting partners during office hours when I’m holding a full-time job. I had wanted to withdraw from my position since February and were being held back, but this time it’s final, so I will no longer be involved with that. I would still be running websites in my spare time to make some extra allowance, but will only be spending a couple of hours per week on that.

Once I get started on my new job, I wonder how things will change for me. I look forward to starting work :)

    Congrats!!! for securing the job.

I’m surprised banks are hiring during these times. Was the job hard to get? Or is there a shortage of people in the risk management area?

I don’t really know about that. Some of my friends are still unemployed, but there are also quite a few that secured great jobs.
