Responsibilities Pouring Down
Blogged By: Low Hang Wei @ March 22nd, 2007 - 6:40 pmMy exam time is near and I have to fulfill my responsibilities of a student… to do well in my exams. I have fallen way behind in my studies since taking on my job and would need to find some time to catch up before my exams in April. Despite thinking that I can succeed in life even without a degree, I still intend to get a good piece of paper as insurance. After all, things can either go like I expected or not go as well as I expected and a degree will definitely be useful if I have to look for a job some day. I liken a degree to getting insurance, the more coverage the better for insurance and likewise for a degree, a better degree will put you in better stead for a job hunt.
Of course, a good degree is not the only thing that matters when seeking employment. Factors like diligence, adaptability, human relations, work efficiency and other factors come into play to determine your career prospects. However, I believe that the more we maximize each factor, the better chance we have to do well. If you think a good degree is not important, since the pay difference isn’t much, then you will tend to dismiss all the small little things that matters. When these small little things add up, I believe it makes the difference between a successful person versus just an average joe.
I vividly remembered myself engrossed with Internet Marketing and neglecting my exams during my O’ Levels, which is one of the major exams. The results I got back weren’t outstanding, and I barely managed to qualify for the course of my interest. I don’t really regret it, since I still ended up in the path I want, but I was testing my luck there. Since then, I decided that if I want to continue my studies, I better take them more seriously. After all, why limit ourselves to perform in one area of our lives when humans have the potential to achieve so much more? I strongly believe that it is possible to achieve academic excellence, while taking on a job at the same time.
With that said, there are periods of time where commitments are coming at us all together and we have to prioritize. For example… in the next month, I will need to face my examinations, therefore I requested to cut down on my commitments at work in April. It’s pointless to try juggling more eggs than I can handle and end up breaking all of them. I might need more time than that to go through all my modules, but I don’t want to be away from work from too long. I’m just afraid it will seem like I don’t care about my work, which is apparently not the case.
So, I have planned my time and estimated around one week to study for my modules before the first paper of my examinations. It’s not much time, but certainly enough if I maintain my focus. To perform well isn’t exactly easy, but that’s what makes it all very rewarding. Pray for me.
