Same Event, Different Perspectives

Blogged By: Low Hang Wei @ October 18th, 2006 - 12:57 pm

I think it’s pretty amazing how we can have different perspectives on the same event. For example, tomorrow I have a test and I can choose to be nervous and worry about how I will do. However, this is negative thinking and will affect the way I study and even my performance during the test.

Therefore, I will choose to adopt another mindset - that it’s once again a chance for me to do well. Of course, thinking positively and remodelling my beliefs is only part of the equation. Without enough preparation, even if I tell myself that I will do well, I will actually have conflicting thoughts. To fully convince myself, I will have to take actions that reinforces my beliefs, which is studying in this case.

Now’s the interesting part: you can apply this concept to whatever you’re doing also. You just have to identify what you want to achieve, believe that you can do it and reinforce your beliefs with actions.

Results = Beliefs + Actions

Of course, it’s just ranting on my part and it’s not scientifically proven, but each time I applied the equation, I did things more effectively. Think about it: How does humans learn?

My own theory on the way humans approach learning is simple: You have to break the belief that you can’t do it. However, in order for you to start believing that you can do it, you have to keep doing it. For example, when we first started learning how to ride a bicycle, we keep falling and never get it right. However, once we managed to ride for a distance the first time, it just seems that everything got easier suddenly.

That’s the point where you overcame your limiting belief about not knowing how to ride a bicycle. From that point on, each time you managed to ride the bicycle, you further reinforce the belief and you gained a skill for life. Therefore, I think that it’s possible for us to learn skills faster, simply by holding onto a belief that everything is easy and we already know how to do it.

Of course, it’s easier said than done. For myself, I still hold onto limiting beliefs like laziness and procrastination, therefore I need more sleep than the average human. The moment I manage to overcome these limiting beliefs, I will have finished half my million dollar journey.
