Showing Appreciation To Your Professors
Blogged By: Low Hang Wei @ June 15th, 2008 - 4:17 amExaminations are over and results are out, but all’s not over yet. Have you taken a few short moments to appreciate that very lecturer or tutor who was able to not just educate you, but also to bring additional laughter in your life? I’m not saying that you have to travel all the way down to the professor’s home and buy him some hamper packed with abalone. However, have you taken that little bit of effort to drop an email to let that cool professor know that his teaching is awesome?
I know a lot of people who ask tutors for consultation during the semester, but very few people seems to drop a note of appreciation to thank their professors after the conclusion of a semester. While I don’t ask for consultations, I do send personalized notes to professors if I really liked their teachings and thank them for the wonderful experience I had in their classes. In this semester, I only sent such a note to one professor, since he was the only one that conducted such interesting lessons that I put in my best effort to attend all his classes.
For some people, it may make more sense to ask for consultation during the semester than to send an email after their grades are out and everything is concluded. Asking for consultation may even help in class participation and their tutor’s perception of them, therefore improving the chances of them scoring better. Comparatively, sending a thank-you email after everything’s concluded does not seem to benefit them in any way.
However, I urge these people to think about the joy they can potentially bring to a professor by just sending a note of appreciation. Additionally, letting the professor know what’s so good about him may motivate him to continue those behaviors in his future classes. While it does not seem to benefit us in any way, it definitely helps to make the world a slightly better place by being appreciative to people around us.
Come on, if you haven’t shown your appreciation, just do it.
P.S: I hope to teach in the future when I am financially free and I know that I will definitely be happy with such a note.
