The Importance of Family Background
Blogged By: Low Hang Wei @ August 21st, 2011 - 2:03 pmI think the realities of having a strong family background is striking me harder and harder nowadays as I relate to people around me. For example, a person with rich parents or strong connections will obviously have the chance to pursue education in the best instituitions and potentially is going to have great certifications landing him a good first job and propelling him in his career. Sometimes, these people do not have to worry about anything and just focus on living their lives as they wish because they have their safety nets, the parents’ wealth and connections.
It strikes me very hard because the average person that works extremely hard and saves every single dime will ultimately not be able to enjoy what these group of ‘elites’ are enjoying. Whether material possessions relate to happiness is a separate question, but the obvious difference here is the choice. I’ll just say that people with great family backgrounds gets to make choices, whereas people without often have to accept what they have even if it makes them unhappy.
I have talked with people from both sides and found that generally, people born out of good backgrounds have more healthy conversations, whereas the other side is generally more negative in nature, complaining about this and that. Of course, I’m just putting things in a general sense and there are always people who break out of these norms, like scholars who climb the corporate ladders or entrepreneurs who enjoy massive successes and elevating their statuses. On the other side, there are wastrels who destroys their family wealth or connections.
However, I think it’s pretty clear to most people that family background plays a major part and this should be the case in the future as well. Noting that there’s nothing much we can do to change our family background, the best thing we can do is to do our best to create a good background for our descendents. In the midst of millions of people trying to make it, we persist in our paths and hope that we make the right decisions.
Each day, with our dreams in mind, we move, sometimes further away and sometimes closer to. Yet, we hold on to our dreams and continue to journey towards it.

While I agree that family background is important and do see the difference between people who came from good family background vs people who are not
I still believe that even if the family background wasn’t that good, it is also on one’s effort to make their life good (or just full of complaints). If one strive and pursue what they like and continue to improve themselves, even if they can’t do get what they want 100%, it shouldn’t be that far from it?
As for people with good background, generally they are more confident and vocal at times.
Yes…the most important thing is provide a good background for the next generation. May not be able to give them millions but at least they shouldn’t need to worry about their parent’s livelihood.
