Upgraded wordpress to version 2.0.5
Blogged By: Low Hang Wei @ December 4th, 2006 - 11:39 pmWell… this version was actually released more than a month ago and I wasn’t really intending to do any upgrades to the version I installed. However, I caught a glimpse of an important note in their update - that this upgrade contains security fixes, therefore I immediately downloaded the new version and upgraded it. The upgrade process was over in a couple of minutes, which makes me think I made a wise choice by not programming the entire blog myself. Why reinvent the wheel when something’s already out there and almost the whole self-hosted blogging community is using it? The only drawback is the speed of churning out pages. Another issue with open source is that hackers are able to look at the codes and more easily exploit security loopholes, but this is not really a drawback. We must always remember that there are also good guys around, who will notice these same vulnerabilities and notify the development team. Whatever it is, I’m just glad that free scripts like wordpress is available.
I also installed wordpress on the gambling site I was talking about yesterday and it was quite irritating that I have to be messing around with CSS. I burnt about 15 minutes to get the template looking the way I want it, then went on to add some introductory text. It’s strange that I’m setting up the site, since I do not intend to promote it and my only intention is to promote the free ebook which is hosted on a subdirectory. Regardless, I won’t feel good if I’m promoting a subpath and the root page is empty, so I’ll just hurry up and finish the whole website with contents that I have written in the past.
Besides working on the upgrade and installation of wordpress, I also looked through RSS directories today and I’ll just say that the experience wasn’t that fun. I initially thought that I just needed to ping all the services with wordpress’s ping feature, but apparently, posts are not getting indexed. It seems that I needed to submit the RSS feed for inclusion first, but I’m not totally sure. The easy way out is to just add Google, Yahoo and other services button to the blog, thereby allowing other people to add the feeds easily. However, I also want my RSS feed to be indexed and I’m still figuring out how to do it for some services. Until I figured out, I should be having quite a lot of irritating afternoons…
